How to Build Your Network

Networking or network building can be fun or somewhat draining, depending on a person’s personality. However you see it, networking is an essential ingredient to making a fulfilling career or business venture.

It might seem unnecessary or time-consuming, but it is an edge at every career stage. Finding a job or starting a business without the right connections will be very challenging, even if you have the education and skills.

How do you build your network, and if you have one, how do you grow it?

Seven Steps to Achieve a Well-structured Network

1. Understand the purpose of networking

Keeping in mind the purpose of networking, you will be encouraged when your shyness tries to hold you back from engaging in that conversation or when you think you have nothing to offer the other person.

2. Find the right people to network with

It is crucial to network with the right people; this is where a proper survey of like minds comes in. Seek out people ready to teach you what they know, who will recommend your services to those who might need them, and who will invite you to networking events and seminars.

This is deliberately picking people who will impact your career success and make your growth process faster and easy. It’s not about networking in the hopes that something will come together.

3. Create win-win scenarios

The same way you watch out for people you invite to be your network is the same way they scrutinize. Before anyone can accept you to be a part of their network, it will be pleasing for them to know you have value for them as well.

Your networking partner will feel cheated and taken advantage of if you gain more than they do. They will be appreciative and eager to return the favor if you flip that around and provide some help.

In the long run, a long-term relationship with this person becomes more effortless.

4. Create a much larger connection/network

While building a network, creating a link between your new and existing networks is essential. It doesn’t necessarily have to be you in the direct line to benefit from networking relationships.

It works just as well if you can connect folks who can benefit from one another. You can develop closer relationships with more people who could connect you with the network you need to scale even higher in your business.

5. Keep the network alive

We have encountered persons who will randomly get in touch with us after years of not speaking to us. When that occurs, you usually don’t want to make an extra effort for them because they haven’t attempted to keep the connection going.

You might get preoccupied with work or with the task of building a business; it might even be family. But however busy you might get, make time to stay in touch and (re)connect with your network.

6. Don’t underestimate the power of social media

Since the invention of social media, it has been easy to connect with people from different continents.

Your network isn’t limited to those within your reach, those only streets away; make use of LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter to establish relationships with various individuals in and outside your field.

7. Organize a networking event

Organizing networking events is one of the most acceptable methods to connect with others who share your interests.

When you organize a series of events around a particular subject, such as marketing, finance, or accounting, you become more well-known and sought-after.

Adding a great network to your business and career tools will expand your thinking and capabilities while increasing your rate of success.
