How to Lead a High-Performing Team Remotely

It is not by luck that a high-performing team comes together. A high-performing team is created when the proper individuals join with creative processes and a dynamic, empowering culture.

Technology has made it possible to create a high-performing team that works together effectively even when physically apart. Successfully leading remote personnel teams can create a leadership/management difficulty.

Some tips for leading productive teams from afar are provided below.

Don’t make the mistake of hiring poorly

Every successful group relies on its solid core of individuals. But discovering the folks with the talents and a personality for your culture requires time and intention.

When hiring for a remote role, ensure your new hire can flourish without much oversight and has solid written and vocal communication abilities. My whole agency is made up of remote workers, and we’ve thrived for over six years thanks to the careful screening and onboarding of new hires. To ensure the quality of our staff, we use a three-stage interview procedure.

In the first stage, conduct a formal interview via video chat. The following is a series of emails where the candidate demonstrates their proficiency in written communication. Then, in the last round (which not all candidates make it to), have them work on an actual project with our team, so you can evaluate how they respond to unexpected challenges.

Provide them with all the details

A high-performing team must have an onboarding process that gets everyone on the same page and working toward the same goal.

Always begin by writing a vision document before assembling a new team or assigning a new assignment to the one you already have. The project’s backstory, scope, story, and ultimate goal are all detailed in the vision document.

When introducing a new client or brand to the team, always make sure to include the company’s or organization’s purpose and vision statement, as well as a description of each team member’s specific responsibilities, so that everyone is on the same page.

The first thing you should do when a new team member joins is to point them to the vision document so they can get an idea of where we’re going.

Develop systems to help sustain the job being done

We also have tools to facilitate communication amongst our teams and the vision document. Several different kinds of software explicitly encourage teamwork. The false assumption that adding more tools and systems will increase output is widespread.

You can’t always count on that being the case. However, an increase in the number of techniques and tools available may result in a corresponding increase in administrative overhead, which may impede productivity. Make sure you know what problem it will solve or what purpose it will serve before you spend money on it.

My consulting firm, Kayson, has been running remotely since its inception in 2012. Since then, we’ve learned that the essential tools for remote teams are relatively simple: email, cloud storage, chat, and a project management application.

Getting your team’s advice on technological decisions is a good idea. They’re the ones who will be putting it to use, after all.

Give them a reason to exist

Teams that excel are typically comprised of individuals that take pride in their work.

The most productive teams I’ve worked with have been those whose members could devote their time and energy to causes they cared about. My team’s productivity has increased as I’ve gotten better at helping them work on things that genuinely excite them.

My company uses two methods for this:

Keep in mind that they have specific requirements

Each team member has a unique set of motivations, and we make it a point to learn about them. Then, before taking on any external tasks, we ensure a consensus within the company.

Keep focused on our goal

When someone joins our team, they know exactly what they’re getting into because we are forthright about our identity, goals, and the nature of our work. When you are open and honest with potential employees, they are more likely to volunteer for the position, ensuring that every team member is invested in their role.

Although some difficulties are associated with managing remote workers, that shouldn’t prevent you from doing so. You can lead a high-performing team from anywhere in the world by being deliberate about who you employ, establishing flexible systems, and giving your team a cause to work for.
